Every day, managing screen time for children and adolescents is a challenge! However, with the pandemic and reduction (or even the absence!!) of social and sports activities, screen time is increasing dramatically! Many parents no longer know how to deal with this issue. How much time should be allowed? Should we give the child free reign?

How much time to allow?

The first step is to determine how much screen time will be given per day. This will depend on the age of the child. Here is a table to help you orient yourself: 

Age

Maximum recommended time per day

Under 2 years

No screen time

2 to 5 years

1 hour maximum

5 to 17 years

2 hours maximum 

It’s also important to limit the use of screens during the following times:

  • during meals, since they have an impact on the quality of social interactions 
  • at least one hour before bedtime because they decrease the secretion of melatonin, which is necessary for falling asleep

How do we get there??

First of all, it’s necessary, as parents, to set an example! Therefore, we need to set aside our cell phones during meals. Also, when the child speaks to us, we must stop paying attention to our screen and focus only on the conversation. By doing these few simple gestures, we teach our children important skills!

Then it’s essential to take time with the child to tell them what the time limits of screen use will be. The best ways to limit screen time are as follows: 

  • Determine hours of use. By setting clear boundaries with your child, it will decrease negotiations. Showing an agreement on the granted periods or hours of use is very helpful. 
  • Limit time by using a visual timer. Rather than using a clock or an appliance timer, using a Time Timer or an hourglass allows children to watch the time go by. It mentally prepares them to end the current activity and begin the transition to another activity..
  • Track and record the child’s usage time and follow up with him: it’s teamwork! Your child (even teenager) won’t regulate everything on their own. Be consistent! Giving privileges regularly won’t encourage your child to respect the time limit granted. 

Remember, the important thing is to find a healthy balance between screen time and other hobbies!
